St. Anthony School Green Club
Any student in the 4th through 8th grade can join the Green Club. The mission of the club is to help the St. Anthony community practice good stewardship for the school, Hawaii, and the planet. The club helps with the recycling program at school and participates in local beach clean ups throughout the year. The first project this school year was helping out at the first Kailua Full Moon Concert Series. Students educated the community about how to responsibly separate their waste. We had a station set up for compost, recycling, rubbish, and even bottle caps. The Green Club helped divert over 60% of the waste from the landfills. We are looking forward to the next community concert on September 28th. Also, we will be at the largest beach clean up in Kailua history on September 15th (see below).

Blue Planet's Bulb Blitz!
October is National Energy Awareness Month, and Blue Planet Foundation aims to replace 100,000 incandescent bulbs with energy-saving CFLs this month with your help! Blue Planet will reward SAS $0.40 for every bulb exchanged. Exchanging 100,000 CFLs will save Hawaii residents more than 14 million on their electricity bills, displacing 81,000 barrels of oil and 40,000 tons of carbon pollution. To learn more about the program go to click here. During the month of October bring your incandescent bulbs to SAS before or after school and receive a free CFL bulb! If exchanging less than four bulbs, please bring a small container for your bulbs. Some suggestions are small milk cartons or a to-go-cup with a lid. Also, The Green Club will have a station set up at the Fall Festival on October 14th to exchange bulbs and all the Saturday and Sunday Masses on October 15 and 16th. The bulbs are free and equivalent to a 60 watt bulb. We have 1,000 bulbs ready for exchange! Email egarrison@saskailua.org with any questions.

Third Grade Vermiculture
What in the world is vermiculture? Third graders are now the school experts in WORM COMPOSTING (aka vermiculture). Thanks to grant monies from The Kokua Hawaii Foundation and Kaneohe Marine Corps Officers’ Spouses’ Club, 3rd graders were treated to a visit by Waikiki Worm Company founder Mindy Jaffe. She taught us the 3Ds of worm care: dark, damp, and dinner. With daily watering and weekly feeding of school lunch leftovers, our Perionyx Excavatusworms will work well. Worm ‘juice’ and poop (vermicasts) will be added to the school garden plots tended by 3rd and 7th graders. Vermiculture helps our school gardens by handling waste and creating compost. We’re on our way to making our school greener and cleaner!

Global Awareness Night
How can we become global citizens and thinkers? How can we help planet earth…our home? These were the questions that drove this culminating project. With the help of the art, music, and computer teachers each grade level started working on their global projects. The environmental learning began with a beach clean-up. After the clean up the students recorded earth day songs for a CD. There were also individual projects completed among grades. Projects included growing basil for pesto, making paper, flower pressing from their garden and reusing plastic bottles into vases, writing earth poetry and attaching it to paper mache globes. Also students researched how long it takes for frequently thrown away lunch items to decompose. Fundraising for Heifer Organization was done while learning about sustainability. Invitations were made on recycled paper while asking the parents to walk, ride bikes, and carpool to event. Students displayed their projects at a Global Awareness Night behind the classrooms where the gardens are located. The Pre-Kindergartners also had their recycle city on display and the SAS Green Club was in attendance. Click here to go to the Global Awareness Night page where there are pictures and video of this project.
